Barcelona have launched a £25m bid for Chelsea defender David Luiz according to Goal.com.

The Nou Camp side have been linked with a number of potential defensive targets as the La Liga title holders look to beef up their threadbare options at centre-back, most prominent of which being PSG’s Thiago Silva, and newly installed boss Gerardo Martino will be keen to bring in a signing to shore up their back-line before the new season starts.

Jose Mourinho apparently has misgivings about the Brazilian and could well consider an offer for Luiz but may well demand a fee higher than the £25m quoted given that Chelsea spent around £23m to bring in the player from Benfica in January 2011.

Luiz is a popular presence in the Chelsea dressing room and is a fan favourite and could perhaps be a better option in the centre of the Blues midfield, where the 26 year old played for portions of 2012/13.

Currently Barcelona have just two effective senior central defensive options, veteran Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, and given the strength in depth in both the club’s midfield and attack it’s certainly a ‘problem area’ that the Catalan side will be keen to resolve.

David Luiz has made 109 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 12 goals, and winning the Champions League and Europa League in the process.
