Manchester United are preparing to make a £25 million bid for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric according to The Times.

The Old Trafford club are desperate to sign a high profile midfielder after finding their efforts this summer largely frustrated.

United were thought to be favourites to sign Spanish under-21 star Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona, only for the youngster to join his former mentor Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich at the last minute.

That prompted the Premier League champions to shift their focus to Alcantara’s former team and Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, only for Barcelona to make it clear they have no intention of letting him leave the Nou Camp.

New United manager David Moyes is keen to bring in a high profile signing to mark the new era of management at the club and is ready to turn his attentions to Modric.

The Croatian midfielder has struggled to establish himself in the Real Madrid first team since joining the club from Tottenham last summer in a £33 million.

But the player remains highly rated in the UK, where he is remembered for his assured performances in the middle of the park at White Hart Lane.

Real Madrid could well be tempted to sell as they look to raise the significant funds required to persuade Tottenham into selling Gareth Bale.
