The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

39. Ilkay Gundogan

A player with the unlimited potential to be a world beater, Gundogan was a shining light in an otherwise disappointing season for the side from the Westfalenstadion.

The 22-year-old found the going tough upon his arrival from Nuremberg two seasons ago, but since Nuri Sahin made way to head to Real Madrid Gundogan found his place in the team and has gone from strength to strength that saw his phenomenal passing vision and tireless running have seen him become the heartbeat of the side.

Still prone to being a little green in the gills, he shows excellent character as the side marched to the final of last season’s Champions League and even had the gall to tuck away the fist penalty of his career in the showpiece event to temporarily restore parity.

Calls have been made for Germany coach Jogi Lowe to drop experienced midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in order to accommodate him, but if he manages to replicate the form he displayed last term once again, he’ll be able to displace the Bayern man on his own merits.
