The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

38. Thibaut Courtois

The first of just two goalkeepers in the CaughtOffside 50, the young Belgian international has proved once again that he has a bright future in the game.

Still unable to get a look in at Chelsea, where, to be honest, his inclusion over that of Petr Cech would not yield a gulf in quality at all, he headed to Spain for another season with Atletico.

Conceding a stingy 29 goals in 37 matches, he earned himself the prestigious Zamora Trophy, given to the custodian with the lowest goals-to-game ratio in the Spanish top flight.

His crowning moment came in the club’s Copa Del Rey triumph over cross city rivals Real in May. A 2-1 victory handed bragging rights to Atletico, and Coutois was a significant part of that feat with a string of impressive saves.

His form has also put him in line with Simon Mignolet for the number one jersey with the Belgian national side, though his involvement in European competition with the Spaniards will most likely give him the advantage over his counterpart in Liverpool.
