The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

The first Bayern Munich player in the CaughtOffside 50, and perhaps, one of the most unexpected.

The Brazilian centre back made the switch to the Alianz Arena last summer from fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach to a relative cry of ‘who?’ from certain sections of the club’ support.

However, they needn’t have been worried as the 29-year-old proved to be a rock for the treble winners, helping them to keep thier goals against tally down to just 18 goals in the league. Shutouts against Juventus and Barcelona in the Champions League only served to strengthen his position as one of the bargains of the season.

Fellow Bayern teammate Philip Lahm has described him as one of the best defenders he has ever played with and his recent inclusion into the Brazilian national side has only seemed to confirm what the German skipper has been saying all along.

His pace, power and dominance in the air have stood him in good stead for the coming season as he looks to hold onto the spot he’s earned with the Selecao.
