The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

Posted by

34. Raphael Varane

It’s not very often that a youngster at Real Madrid causes such a stir, mostly because they don’t get much of a chance in the first team, but Varane has made a first team spot his own alongside Pepe, who has said that he believes the French stopper will become “one of the best in the world”.

It’s been a steady progression for the former Lens defender since joining the club two years ago. Making his first impact in January during his Classico debut at the Bernabeu where his all action display saw him clear a Xavi shot off the line, produce two world class, goal stopping tackles on Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi before finally thumping home a late equaliser. Varane then scored again in the second leg to send Real through at the expense of their bitter rivals.

He was soon keeping Pepe out of the starting line up as he made the position his own and his elegance and unbelievable reading of the game far belies his tender years. A CaughtOffside 50 regular for sure.
