The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

24. Arjen Robben

The 29-year-old has gone from heartbreaking lows to dizzying highs over the course of the past season. Having been made the scapegoat for missing the crucial penalty in Bayern’s Champions League final defeat a year ago, and being unable to help the club wrestle the title back from Borussia Dortmund, he bounced back in spectacular fashion to play a major part on the club’s success this time around.

His days at the club seemed to be coming to a close at the beginning of last season as he was roundly booed by the club’s support and missed a large chunk of the campaign through injury.

However, once he returned to full fitness there was no stopping the Dutch winger as he returned with some of the finest football he had ever played, running Barcelona’s full backs through a loop as he scored in both home and away legs in their encounter and he was rewarded for his good form by setting up Mario Mandzukic’s opener and scoring a last minute winner of his own in this season’s final at Wembley.

The only thing keeping him from a higher spot in the CaughtOffside 50 is the lack of games earlier on in the season, otherwise he may well find himself inside the top 10.
