The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

5. Robin Van Persie

A player truly worthy of his place in the top five of the CaughtOffside 50 after almost single handedly inspiring Manchester United to the title last season.

The 29-year-old sparked plenty of debate when he left Arsenal to join the Red Devils last summer, but it turned out to be a stroke of genius by Sir Alex Ferguson and many can look at it as one of the greatest parting gifts he could have given the club.

RVP finished the season as the Premier League’s top goalscorer with 26 strikes that were instrumental in helping United reclaim the title back from cross city neighbours Manchester City. He demoted former star striker Wayne Rooney to the bench, something that has now caused the England man to question his future at the club.

The Dutchman also has an excellent record for turning up for the big games, notching goals against the top eight teams in the Premier League last term, and should this good run of form continue then the club will have no problems in keeping City at arms length in their efforts to reclaim the title.
