The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

3. Gareth Bale

The highest ranked Premier League player in the CaughtOffside 50 saw his team win nothing last season, though individually he cleaned up as though his life depended on it.

His influence on the Tottenham side was so great that many lauded them as a one man team, and though it wasn’t quite as drastic as that, there was certainly a case for them being much better off with him than without.

The 24-year-old has steadily seen his role change within the squad, moving from left back, to left wing before finally settling in the free role just behind the strikers where his assists have become almost as important and frequent as his goals.

His efforts in both league and cup tournaments saw him named as Player of the Year by both the FWA and PFA, who also crowned him Young Player of the Year.

Quick, powerful and with a wonderful left foot, it’s no wonder that Spurs are fighting as hard as they can to keep a hold of him as Real Madrid prepare a world record £85 million bid to prize him away from White Heart Lane.
