Tottenham Hotspur have moved a step closer to signing £7 million-rated Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches, with the player’s agent confirming that a deal to take the Romanian to White Hart Lane this summer was now “99 per cent” done, reports the Daily Mirror.

The north London club have been closely monitoring the highly rated Romania international in recent weeks as a possible replacement for fellow centre-back Steven Caulker, and now that the England international has joined Cardiff City for £8m, Tottenham are set to land Chiriches in his place.

The 23-year-old, who has a contract in the Romanian capital that runs until June 30 2015, has been with Steaua for the past two seasons now, having originally arrived at the club from Pandurii Targu Jiu in the summer of 2011.

And in the intervening two-year period, the central defender has appeared in 57 matches for the Romanian giants, scoring four goals in the process, including one strike in his 40 league outings for the club.

However, according to Chiriches’s agent, Ioan Becali, the two clubs have reached an agreement for the Romanian, with all that is now needed for the deal to go ahead is the player’s signature.

“It’s at the 99% mark. It is made, it lacks only the signature of the boy, who will arrive soon,” said Becali.

“Steaua had offers of £6m and £6.5m, but did not accept and said they only want £6.9m. Now the offer is on the table.”
