Released West Ham United striker Carlton Cole is being made to wait on news confirming whether or not he has secured a shock move to French side St Etienne, talkSPORT reports.

The 29-year-old is now a free agent and is looking to find a new club as soon as possible after seeing proposed deals with the likes of Hull City and Crystal Palace collapse. He has also reportedly been targeted by several clubs in the United States, but so far no deal has materialised.

However, reports emerged earlier this week that the high flying Ligue 1 club were heavily interested in bringing him to continental Europe.

The club from the Loire Valley are looking for a new frontman to replace the now departed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who left to join Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund earlier in the summer, leaving Brazilian ace Brandao as the side’s only out-and-out striker.

But Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier has said that the club will take their time before deciding if Cole is the right man to come into the club.

“We need an attacker who can take at least two roles – the anchor role and the deeper striker role, where he is capable of replacing and or playing alongside Brandao,” he said.

“We cannot expect things to happen immediately.”
