Liverpool face a fight to keep hold of Daniel Agger after the players agent revealed that the defender would be interested in a move to Barcelona, the Guardian reports.

The La Liga giants had a £14.6 million bid for Agger rejected by Liverpool last week but reports suggest that the Catalan club are willing to improve their offer in order to land the Dane.

Brendan Rodgers made Agger Liverpool’s vice-captain last week in an attempt to persuade the defender to stay but the players agent Per Steffensen says that Agger is still interested in a move to Spain.

“We are aware that Barcelona have made an offer for Daniel that Liverpool have rejected,” said Steffensen, who was approached by an agent representing the Spanish club several weeks ago. “Daniel has a contract with Liverpool for the next three years and it would be up to the clubs to agree a fee for his transfer in order for that to change.”

Losing Agger would be a huge blow to Rodgers hopes of leading Liverpool to a fourth place finish in the Premier League this season.

The Dane is a hugely important player for the Reds when fit and even more so now that Jamie Carragher has retired.

Liverpool did sign Kolo Toure on a free transfer earlier in the summer but more additions would need to made to the Reds defence if Agger were to leave.
