The midfielder is thought to have rejected a new contract at Real Madrid and will look to leave on a free transfer next summer.
Liverpool look to be in pole position to re-sign Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso next summer when the midfielders contract expires, the Daily Star reports.
Reports suggest that the Spaniard has rejected the chance to sign a new contract with Real and will look to leave the club next summer on a free transfer.
Alonso had been linked with a move back to Liverpool this summer but will now wait until next year and actively seek a move back to Anfield, where he spent several successful seasons before moving to Madrid in 2009.
However, Fiorentina are also known to be interested in signing Alonso and may well tempt the Spaniard with a move to Florence by offering him an exceptionally lucrative contract.
Alonso may end up struggling to get into the Real Madrid this season, with the La Liga giants signing Asmir Illarramendi from Real Sociedad, who is seen by many as a replacement for Alonso.
Although new Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is said to be a fan of Alonso, he maybe tempted to give Illarramendi an extended run in the first team at the expensive of Alonso.
