Liverpool have rejected an offer from La Liga champions Barcelona for their Danish centre-back Daniel Agger according to Goal.com.

The Catalan giants are in the market for a new defender as they prepare for life without ageing club legend Carlos Puyol.

The Spanish centre-back is reaching the autumn of his career and has struggled with injuries in recent seasons.

That often left Barcelona short at the back and the club are keen to bring in a replacement sooner rather than later.

Barcelona chiefs are keen for the player to easily be able to fit into the club’s passing style of football.

The Catalans have previously been linked with the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany, but has so far been frustrated in their attempts to bring someone in.

Liverpool are unlikely to be too keen on selling Agger, with the club expecting Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel to leave in the coming weeks.

The club also lost defensive stalwart Jamie Carragher over the summer after the former England star decided to hang up his boots.

The club also added former Manchester City and Arsenal defender Kolo Toure to their ranks early on in the summer transfer window.
