Manchester United are preparing to go head to head with Real Madrid in the chase for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale according to The Independent.

The Welsh star has been strongly linked with a move away from White Hart Lane after a highly impressive season for Spurs which culminated in Bale winning the PFA Player of the Year Award.

Those performances have not gone unnoticed, with Spanish giants Real having publically expressed their admiration for Bale.

Tottenham remain determined to hang on to Bale though and club chairman Daniel Levy will make sure the club sell on their terms should the player leave the club.

Real are thought to be have been somewhat put off by Tottenham’s demands for Bale and that could pave the way for Manchester United to secure his signature.

The Old Trafford side are desperate to sign a high profile player after missing out on Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas during recent weeks.

It is understood that United would not look to finance the deal by selling Wayne Rooney. United boss David Moyes has insisted that Rooney will be staying at the club and denied reports of a fall-out between the pair.

The striker is set to meet up with the England squad as they prepare for their match against Scotland on Wednesday.
