Russian side Spartak Moscow have joined the race for Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld by submitting a £6million offer for the Liverpool and Everton target, reports Sky Sports.

The 24-year-old Belgian international has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, but it now appears that the Spartak have stolen a march by lodging a tangible bid.

Alderweireld, whose contract runs out next summer, has welcomed the interest telling De Telegraaf: ‘I now understand that they [Spartak] have made Ajax an offer for me.

‘Only when the clubs are granted permission (to talk to me) will I think.

‘I want to focus first on Belgium-France on Wednesday.’

He added: ‘I’ve always said that I will seriously look at each option.

‘Those who know me, know that I will never choose just for the money but for the image and history of the team.’

Marc Overmars, currently the Eredivisie champions’ director of football, confirmed that the Dutch side had received a bid over the weekend.

“We have received an offer,” the former Arsenal midfielder told the De Telegraaf.

Overmars added: “We won’t give any names as we are still in talks.

“But, just like with Norwich City earlier, I expect we can work out a deal with this club.”

The centre-back, who can also feature at full-back, is understood to be keen on a switch to the Premier League with the Merseyside rivals thought to be leading the chasing pack.

Alderweireld has already reportedly rejected a move to England this summer after deciding against a move to Norwich City, despite the two club agreeing a fee, earlier in the transfer window.
