West Ham are on the verge of signing Liverpool winger Stewart Downing according to Sky Sports.

Liverpool are set to take a massive ‘hit’ on the £20m investment they made in the England international with the Anfield side ready to accept £5m for a player they paid £20m for two years ago.

Downing had a shocking first campaign with the Merseyside club but showed signs of improvement last term but it appears Brendan Rodgers is nonetheless ready to sell the wide-man, perhaps with a view to bolster funds ahead of further summer purchases.

Stewart Downing is due for a medical today and he will reunite with former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll at the Upton Park side.

During his spell at Liverpool Downing racked up 91 appearances and has scored seven goals in the process.

Prior to his move to Liverpool Downing made a name for himself at Middlesbrough before moving to Villa Park in a £12m switch in July 2009 before completing his move to Anfield.

The emergence of Raheem Sterling and Suso, as well as the purchase of Coutinho would appear to have left Downing very much surplus to requirements at Liverpool and a move to the Hammers may well help to re-ignite the 29 year old’s career.
