Unsettled Manchester United front man Federico Macheda could be set to sign for Championship outfit Doncaster Rovers on loan next season, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The Italy Under-21 international has struggled badly of late to break into the Red Devils’ first-team squad, despite having made an encouraging initial start to his career at Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old moved to the north west five years ago and made an immediate name for himself when coming off the bench to score a dramatic late winner against Aston Villa at Old Trafford to help Sir Alex Ferguson’s side go on to win the 2008-09 Premier League title from arch-rivals Liverpool.

However, that strike was very much the high point in the front man’s five-year stay at the club so far, with Macheda having featured in 36 matches in total in all competitions for United since 2008, scoring five goals in the process, including four goals in his 19 Premier League outings.

As a result, Macheda has already been sent out on loan to the likes of Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers and Stuttgart, only to score just the one goal in total though in those three spells away from United.

And now it appears as though the forward is set for yet another loan move, although this time down a division, to Doncaster.
