Newcastle United looked set to switch their focus to Belgium international Jelle Vossen after finding themselves frustrated in their pursuits of other targets according to The Daily Star.

The club had hoped to bolster their ranks with a number of strikers in the last few days but have found themselves unable to push through the deals.

Newcastle were thought to be favourites to sign Darren Bent, but it now looks like the Aston Villa striker is likely to sign elsewhere.

Fulham and Crystal Palace are now though to be favourites to sign the former Sunderland, Tottenham and Charlton man, prompting Newcastle boss Alan Pardew to look for alternatives.

The Tyneside club thought they were close to securing a deal for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis, but the Ligue 1 club’s chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed that the negotiations have since gone cold.

That has prompted speculation suggesting that Newcastle are on the verge of making a £7 million bid for Genk striker Vossen.

The club hope to complete the deal before they line up against Manchester City next weekend in their first game of the new Premier League season.

Everton and Sunderland have previously expressed an interest in Vossen, who has netted 65 times for his club over the last three years.
