Sunderland are set to make an audacious attempt to steal Valencia defender Aly Cissokho from under the noses of Liverpool, according to Sky Sports.

The French international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer as he has declared himself ready to try his luck in the Premier League.

However, despite the continued links with the Reds, they now appear to have switched their attentions to Grenada’s Guilherme Siqueira instead, which paves the way for Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio to have a clear run at the 25-year-old.

Valencia are said to be keen on letting the player leave in a bid to help ease their mounting off-field financial difficulties, though Sunderland are initially hoping to land the player on loan with the view of completing a permanent deal next summer should all go according to plan.

Sources close to the player have suggested that he has agreed personal terms with the Weirsiders but a deal to take him to the Stadium of Light has yet to be put in place.

Sunderland will have to act fast, though, as Turkish giants Besiktas are also thought to be in the running for Cissokho’s signature after expressing an interest in bringing him to Istanbul.
