Tottenham are making significant progress over a move for Roma and Argentina star Erik Lamela, according to the Daily Mail.

The 21-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best young talents in Serie A, and Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas is reportedly willing to fork out £30million to sign him this summer.

The North London club face the prospect of losing star player Gareth Bale to Real Madrid before the close of the transfer window, and are hoping to persuade the Welshman of their ambition and top-four credentials by making big signings.

Spanish international striker Roberto Soldado has already been brought in for £30million from Valencia, as well as highly-rated Brazilian midfielder Paulinho, and Villas-Boas will be hoping Lamela will soon be joining them.

However, the Argentine forward could still be moving as a replacement for Bale rather than as a team-mate, as the winger’s future remains up in the air. The signing of a top young prospect like Lamela, though, would surely ease the pain of Bale’s exit.

Lamela can play in a variety of attacking positions, and would slot in ideally at White Hart Lane under the Portuguese coach’s attack-minded lineup.
