The Russians will be looking to take advantage of their hosts recent winless record to further strengthen their credentials for qualification and close the gap between themselves and group leaders Portugal.
Russia are currently two points behind the Portuguese in their group, but have games in hand.
Their opponents, Northern Ireland, have yet to record a victory in Group F and find themselves looking at another disappointing campaign.
They have been depleted with the likes of David Healy, Paddy McCourt and Chris Baird all being left out whilst Manchester United defender Johnny Evans missing thanks to an ankle injury that kept him out of the Community Shield final at the weekend.
Kyle Lafferty and Chris Brunt are also missing thanks to injury and suspension respectively.
Fabio Capello also faces a selection dilemma of his own as regular starters Andrey Arshavin, Alexander Kokorin, Alexei Berezutsky and Yury Zhirkov are all missing through injury.
The omissions have meant that new faces have had to be called up in the shape of Real Madrid striker Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba, who currently leads the goal scoring charts in Russia.
