Newcastle United are set to follow up their previous interest in highly rated Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The Belgium international is currently one of the most sought-after centre backs plying their trade on the Continent, with the likes of Premier League sides Liverpool, Everton and Norwich City have all recently been closely monitoring the centre back, while Russian giants Spartak Moscow have also lodged a bid of £5 million for the player.

However, it is understood that the 24-year-old would prefer a move to England next season as opposed to Russia, despite Spartak having offered Alderweireld personal terms of £60,000 per week, and now the Magpies are hoping to be able to persuade the central defender to make the move to St James’ Park before the close-season transfer window finally slams shut for business for the year on Sept 2.

Alderweireld has been with the Eredivisie champions throughout his whole career to date, having made his debut at the Amsterdam ArenA in January 2009 and in the intervening four-year period, the centre back has gone on to feature in 182 games for the Dutch giants, scoring 15 goals in the process.
