Southampton are in pole position to sign Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo, with the Italian club set to try and convince the Italian front-man to move to the south coast of England, Sky Sports reports.

The striker has been linked with several clubs this summer, including Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid and Benfica but it now appears that he will be plying his trade in the Premier League.

Southampton manager Manuel Pochettino is desperate to sign a quality striker this summer as the Saints build on a successful first season back in the Premier League.

The club had been linked with Internacional striker Leanrdo Damiao but will focus all their efforts on signing Osvaldo.

Although they seem to be leading the race to sign Osvaldo at the moment, Southampton will face competition from several other Premier League sides, including Fulham and Tottenham.

Spurs appear to be Southampton’s main rivals at the moment, with reports suggesting that Tottenham’s director of football Franco Baldini has met with members of Roma’s hierarchy to discuss a move for Osvaldo.

Andre Villas-Boas has already signed Roberto Soldado from Valencia this summer but is keen to re-enforce his attacking options further by signing Osvaldo.
