Chelsea are set to step up their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, as the German international continues to look for a way out of the club.

Reports emerged yesterday that Khedira was closing in on a move to French giants PSG, but according to the Metro, Chelsea are still in with a chance of luring him to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have been linked with a number of defensive midfielders over the last few months, and looked to have switched their attentions to Roma star Daniele De Rossi after giving up on Khedira.

However, it has emerged that the former Stuttgart man could be keen on a reunion with Jose Mourinho, who initially brought him to the Bernabeu in 2010 and who only left the club for a return to Chelsea earlier this summer.

Mourinho remains a fan of Khedira, and is thought to place him ahead of the likes of De Rossi and Ilkay Gundogan on his transfer wish-list, whilst John Obi-Mikel could also be allowed to leave the club for Galatasaray or Monaco if a replacement can be brought in.

Khedira won the La Liga title with Real in 2012, but is one of several players to be looking for an exit after a disappointing season in 2013.
