Liverpool and Tottenham look likely to miss out on the signing of Ajax star Christian Eriksen, with the Sky Sports reporting that the Danish international wants to join a club playing in the Champions League.

Both Premier League teams have been strongly linked with interest in Eriksen for much of the summer, and were thought to be ready to battle it out once again for his signature as the transfer window draws to a close.

However, the attacking midfielder now seems more likely to choose a move to Italian champions Juventus, who can offer him the Champions League football that his agent claims he desires.

Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with the 21-year-old, and could still look to him to help fill the void left at the club by Mario Goetze, though they have already brought in Henrikh Mkhitaryan for that position – another player, incidentally, who was targeted by Liverpool this summer.

“There has been contact with a club from Germany and one from Italy,” his agent said.

“He will only leave Ajax to join a team that are automatically qualified for the Champions League and fighting for the title every season.”

Eriksen looks destined for big things in the game, and Ajax will be hoping not to lose him on a free transfer, with his current contract set to expire in a year’s time.

Liverpool will likely now turn their attention towards Anzhi Makhachkala forward Willian, while Spurs are looking into the signing of Roma starlet Erik Lamela.
