Blues look to Dortmund for defensive reinforcements.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is weighing up a £22million bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to Sports Direct News.
The Blues have had to deal with serious interest from Barcelona in Brazilian centre-back David Luiz for much of the summer, and have had a number of defensive targets of their own in case he does make the move to the Nou Camp.
So far Mourinho has failed in his attempts to sign Eliaquim Mangala from Porto and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, and has identified Hummels as a good option to strengthen his back line.
The German international has been one of Dortmund’s best players over the last few years, helping Jurgen Klopp’s side to two consecutive Bundesliga titles and an appearance in last season’s Champions League final, where they were beaten by Bayern Munich at Wembley.
The 24-year-old has also been a target for Manchester United and Barcelona in recent months, though he appears committed to Dortmund, and may prove to be the latest near-miss for Chelsea in the transfer market.
The Blues have also reportedly shown an interest in Hummels’ Dortmund team-mate Ilkay Gundogan, as a new defensive midfielder is also on the agenda at Stamford Bridge.
