Liverpool have returned with an improved offer for highly rated Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers is currently in the middle of a mini defensive crisis at the back at Anfield after only one game of the new Premier League season.

At present, the Northern Irishman is without the services of central defender Sebastian Coastes, who damaged ligaments in his right knee playing for Uruguay in Japan last week, ruling the player out for six months.

Alongside side Coates’s long-term injury, Rodgers is also having to contend with knocks to centre-backs Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, while the Slovakia international is wanted by former Reds boss Rafa Benitez at Napoli.

And with England international Martin Kelly still some short of regaining full fitness following his own long injury layoff last season with a serious knee problem, the Merseyside giants could face the prospect of travelling to Aston Villa on Saturday with only one fit central defender, Kolo Toure.

As a result, Rodgers has now returned to the Portuguese capital to lodge a second bid for Ilori after the Reds saw an on offer of £3 million for the 20-year-old turned down by Sporting in June.

However, with the London-born defender having refused to sign a contract extension with Sporting, Liverpool are understood to be confident of signing Ilori before the window shuts on Sept 2, with his club demanding £6m for his services.
