Man United are said to be open to the prospect of selling Wayne Rooney to Chelsea but are hoping to secure Spanish playmaker Juan Mata as part of any deal with the West London club according to Goal.com.

Jose Mourino has thus far failed with two bids for 27 year old England man Rooney and is said to be readying a third offer but with Man United said to be holding out for £40m for the striker it appears that the Old Trafford side are looking at some sort of compromise deal that would see Mata move in the opposite direction.

Whilst the former Valencia man has been an outstanding success since moving to the Premier League Mourinho may feel the need to bring in an effective, prolific, goal-scorer to spearhead the Man United attack is worthy of a sacrifice of the 25 year old Spanish international.

After all Chelsea have an abundance of creative attacking talent with Mourinho being able to call upon the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Frank Lampard and may have high hopes for young Brazilian Lucas Piazon and could therefore believe a swap deal could be one way to help secure a deal to bring in Rooney.

Mata was left on the bench for Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture and was then hauled off after just over an hour during last night’s fixture with Aston Villa. It’s worth noting that both Hazard and Lampard played 90 minutes of both fixtures.

Rooney was also benched for Man United’s opening fixture of the season but came on to produce an effective cameo display that saw Man United’s fourth highest goal-scorer of all time provide two assists during his half an hour run-out.
