Paris St Germain defender Thiago Silva has agreed a contract extension with the club that will see him stay at the French Champions until 2018, Goal.com reports.

Speculation earlier in the summer had suggested that Silva would be interested in a move to Barcelona, with the Catalan club eager to strengthen their defence by signing the powerful centre back.

However, Silva dismissed those claims and has now put any speculation regarding his future to bed by signing a one year contract extension with PSG.

“We are very proud to have extended with Thiago, an exemplary players both on and off the pitch,” club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said in a statement.

“He symbolises PSG’s wish to build one of the most successful teams in Europe in the mean time.”

PSG have always said that they had no intention of selling Silva, despite Barcelona’s continued interest in a player that the Catalan club tried to sign last summer, only for Silva to choose to move to Paris.

Silva played a key role in his debut season with PSG, helping the French club win their first Ligue 1 title since 1994.

The Brazilian is latest player to extend his contract with PSG after young midfielder Marco Verratti extended his deal only a few days ago.
