Arsenal are set to rival Liverpool in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel, the Daily Star reports.

Liverpool have already had a £3 million bid for Capel dismissed by Sporting Lisbon, with the Portuguese side holding out for closer to the players £6 million valuation.

Now it appears that Arsenal will enter the race to sign the 25 year old, with Arsene Wenger interested in the winger due to his attractive style of play and his low price tag.

Capel wants to leave Portugal so that he can test himself in a more competitive league and reports suggest he would be interested in a move to the Premier League.

The Gunners are set to make a formal enquiry about Capel’s availability in the coming days and may hold the advantage over Liverpool when it comes to agreeing a deal with the player because they will probably be in this years Champions League group stages.

Arsenal beat Fenerbache 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off and will be heavy favourites to qualify for the group stages when the two sides meet again at the Emirates for the second leg.
