Blues hoping to complete two big-name signings by next week.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is set to make two major additions to his squad next week with the £72million double signing of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, CaughtOffside can reveal.
With the Blues meeting United in a crucial Premier League tie at Old Trafford on Monday night, the transfer of Rooney has been temporarily postponed, but it seems increasingly likely now that the 27-year-old will be granted his wish of a move to Stamford Bridge.
A number of clubs have been tracking Rooney this summer ever since he submitted a transfer request at United, though in recent weeks it is Chelsea who have prioritised signing the unsettled England star as they look to solve their problems upfront.
Mourinho has not been happy with his current striking options of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, while talented youngster Romelu Lukaku is still relatively inexperienced at the top level to become first choice immediately. While targets such as Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani have slipped away, Rooney has become Mourinho’s first choice to spearhead his side.
Rooney has also welcomed Chelsea’s interest, as he has been unhappy with his bit-part role at United last season, when he was often played out of position or simply left on the bench to accommodate Robin van Persie, and is looking to kick-start his career again with a move to United’s rivals.
While United have been determined to hold on to Rooney, they look ready to accept a bid of around £40million for the former Everton man, which they will see as a decent price for an unsettled and unhappy player.
The move will no doubt be a controversial one, with the two sides set to go head-to-head in the title race this season, and Chelsea are likely to cause further shockwaves with the news that they have nipped in to sign Anzhi Makhachkala forward Willian from under the noses of Tottenham.
The Brazil international has been in London for the last few days to undergo a medical and finalise terms with the White Hart Lane club, but was alerted to Chelsea’s interest late last night, with the Blues making a £32million offer to throw his move to Spurs into doubt.
Mourinho has hinted strongly that Willian will choose Chelsea over Spurs, and the 25-year-old could add several options to his side’s attack, as the versatile player is capable of playing in a variety of positions, either out wide, upfront or behind the main striker.
The signing of Willian has thrown Juan Mata’s future at the club into some doubt, and it is thought that he could still be included as part of the Rooney deal, with United keen on signing a midfield playmaker of his type.
Mata has previously stated, however, that he wishes to stay with Chelsea and fight for a place, despite increased competition this season from new signing Andre Schurrle, and Kevin De Bruyne, who has returned to the club after a loan spell with Werder Bremen.
