Tottenham Hotpur are interested in signing coveted Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The highly rated Belgium international has been attracting the attentions of a whole host of other Premier League clubs so far during the close season, including the likes of top-flight giants Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United.

However, so far none of those sides have made an approach to the Eredivisie champions to sign their skipper, who only has a contract at the Amsterdam ArenA that runs until June 2014.

All of which has now opened the door for Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas to make his own move for the highly rated 24-year-old, who has been with the Dutch giants for his whole career to date, making his Ajax debut in January 2008.

In the intervening five-year period, the central defender has gone on to appear in 182 matches in total in all competitions for Ajax, scoring an impressive 15 goals in the process, including seven strikes in his 124 league outings for the club.

And now it looks as though Spurs are set to steal a march on all of their Premier League rivals by sealing a cut-price deal for Alderweireld before the summer window shuts on Sept 2.
