Real Madrid could enter the race to sign Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o and may see him as a replacement for Karim Benzema, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, the Daily Express reports.

Eto’o is set to leave Anzhi before the transfer window closes, with the Russian club looking to sell their top players so that they can get their financial situation under control.

Several clubs are thought to be tracking Eto’o, including Chelsea, who could sign the striker if they fail in their pursuit of Manchester United front-man Wayne Rooney.

However, Chelsea may now face competition from Real Madrid for Eto’s signature, with the Spanish giants seeing the striker as the ideal replacement for Benzema should the striker move to Arsenal.

Reports suggest Madrid are seriously considering offloading Benzema to Arsenal in a bid to help fund their move for Gareth Bale.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti would be happy to let Eto lead the line at Madrid for this season while youngsters Jese Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata gain experience.

Ancelotti doesn’t think the two young strikers are ready to shoulder the burden of leading the line at Madrid just yet and will want to sign an experienced striker, such as Eto’o if Benzema does leave.
