Tottenham are expected to take their summer spending to over £60million with the capture of Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches who is set to be announced as a Spurs player before the end of the month according the Daily Express.

The Romanian centre-half had looked poised to make the switch to White Hart Lane last month but controversial Steaua chairman Gigi Bacali cancelled the transfer at the last minute, instructing the club to keep the player from his jail cell, where he is serving a three-year prison sentence.

However Becali has now decided to let the 23-year-old defender leave once he has played a part in the second leg of Steaua’s Champions League qualifying play-off against Legia Warsaw on Tuesday and he could be in England for a medical next week.

According to Romanian reports, Spurs will pay £8.5m in two installments to land the classy centre-back, who impressed for Steaua during their Europa League run including matches against Chelsea, and the player has reportedly agreed personal terms at White Hart Lane.

Romanian coach Victor Piturca intensified speculation by appearing to confirm that Chiriches would be on the move, saying: “From what I know, in the next few days Chiriches will sign for another team.”

Spurs now look to have beaten off competition from Serie A side’s Roma and AC Milan as Andre Villas-Boas looks to bolster his defence following the summer departures of William Gallas and Steven Caulker.

The Portuguese boss has already added Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Roberto Soldado and Etienne Capoue to his squad as he seeks Champions League qualification after missing out on the final day last term.
