Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger is set to return with an improved bid of £17 million for Newcastle United midfield player Yohan Cabaye, while the Gunners boss is also interested in signing Real Madrid midfield player Angel Di Maria this summer, according to reports in the Sun on Sunday.

The north London club caused much controversy last Sunday night when lodging an offer of just £10m with the Magpies for their coveted France international that was immediately rejected out of hand by the Geordies, whose manager Alan Pardew later described the bid as “insulting”.

However, it now appears as though the Gunners are preparing a second improved offer worth £17m for the 27-year-old, although that is still short of Newcastle’s £20m valuation of their star man, who has registered an impressive 11 goals and 11 assists in his 73 matches in total since moving to St James’ Park from Lille in 2011.

Meanwhile, Wenger also wants to sign coveted Madrid wide man Di Maria, whose own future at the Santiago Bernabeu is now under great doubt with the imminent arrival of Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Gareth Bale in the Spanish capital to play in the Argentinian’s position.

But Wenger knows it will not be easy to persuade the 25-year-old, who has a contract with los Blancos that runs until 2018, to move to the Emirates this summer, with the winger understood to want to remain with the Spanish giants and fight for his place in the team this season.
