Arsenal are confident of beating Chelsea in the race to sign Man United striker Wayne Rooney according to the Daily Star.

Chelsea have failed with two bids for the 27 year old England man and Arsene Wenger is apparently encouraged by the fact that his Arsenal side maintain a better relationship with the Old Trafford side who could perhaps be more willing to sell to the North London club if they feel that the Gunners are not genuine Premier League title rivals.

Wenger is keen to bring in four players before the transfer window closes and the Arsenal boss is keen to bring in striking reinforcements, this despite the fact that both Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski have been in goal-scoring form thus far this season.

Having failed in their attempts to land Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez Arsene Wenger has gone on to pursue Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema but are now ready to push on with efforts to bring in Rooney, who started the season on the bench before coming on to provide two assists as Man United defeated Swansea City 4-1.

Rooney has scored 198 goals in 401 appearances for Man United and is the club’s fourth highest goal-scorer of all time and seemingly not happy to be used in a limited role by new boss David Moyes.
