AS Roma are understood to be interested in swapping defender Federico Balzaretti for Tottenham Hotspur full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The Italy international has only been with the Serie A giants for the past season now, having originally moved to the Italian capital from Palermo last August on a three-year deal for a fee of just 4.5 million euros.

And in his debut season at the Stadio Olimpico, the left back appeared in 32 matches in total in all competitions for the Romans, including making 27 Serie A appearances for the club as well.

However, it is believed that the Italians are now interested in swapping the 31-year-old for Tottenham’s own left back, who has been told by Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas that he is now surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane this season and that he can leave the north London club this summer.

Assou-Ekotto has been with Spurs since 2006, when the 29-year-old arrived in the capital from French outfit RC Lens for a fee of £3.5m.

And in the mean time, the Cameroon international has scored five goals in his 195 appearances for the club in all competitions.
