Liverpool will increase their efforts to sign highly rated Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho this season following injuries picked up by both Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho on Tuesday night, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The Merseyside giants lost both their experienced Cameroon international as well as their new loanee from Valencia whilst overcoming League One strugglers Notts County 4-2 after extra time in the second round of the League Cup at Anfield.

Centre-back Toure is expected to be out of action for a long period of time after tearing his groin, although France international left-back Cissokho’s ankle injury is not thought to be as serious.

Either way, though, Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers is still going to need to raid the summer transfer market before the window closes for business for the year on Sept 2 in order to bring in some much-needed defensive reinforcements at the back at Anfield, with the Ligue 1 champions’ central defender understood to be his number one target.

The occasional France international only has a contract at the Parc des Princes that runs until June 2014 and as such, the big-spending Parisians would rather sell the 23-year-old this summer rather than risk losing the player on a free next year.
