Roma have officially confirmed a deal has been struck that will see Argentine international Erik Lamela move to Tottenham for a fee of €30m (£25m)

Although Spurs are yet to unveil the player, it seems certain now that a move is complete and the exciting young midfielder will become the club’s fifth major signing of the summer, taking their spending to around £90million.

Roma, who have already dealt the blow of losing key duo Marquinhos and Pablo Osvaldo this summer, issued a statement confirming the sale, saying:

“Roma announce they have signed a contract with Tottenham for the outright sale of the playing rights of Erik Lamela, in exchange for 30m euros.

“The agreement also includes the obligation to pay 5m euros in bonuses related to the achievements of the player and the English club.”

The completion of Lamela’s move to White Hart Lane could see an imminent announcement on the future of Gareth Bale, with Spurs reportedly keen to wrap up a deal for the Argentine before sanctioning the sale of the Welsh winger to Real Madrid.

Bale is expected to make a world record move for over £86million, and the anticipation of this sale has allowed manager Andre Villas-Boas to invest heavily in new players this summer.

Lamela, who will become the club’s record signing, will join the likes of Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli in moving to north London this summer, giving Spurs a strong squad that looks capable of a serious title challenge.

Further signings could still follow, with Villas-Boas hinting at deals for Christian Eriksen and Vlad Chiriches.

Roma, meanwhile, look to have replaced Lamela with Fiorentina attacker Adem Ljajic, who has taken Lamela’s number 8 shirt at the Stadio Olimpico.
