Former Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane has said that Gareth Bale can be the best player in the world over the next “four or five years” as he offers to mentor the Welshman ahead of his proposed move to the Spanish capital, the Daily Mail reports.

The Spurs ace is being lined up for an imminent move to Real Madrid – who will pay a world-record transfer fee for his services and could unveil him in the coming days.

The 24-year-old has yet to play for Tottenham this season and manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed that he doesn’t expect to see the player at any more of the club’s games.

And with Madrid still talking up the move, former French international Zidane is still hoping to be able to play a hands on role in the player’s development.

The former world player of the year will know what he’s talking about too, given the £45.6m fee the La Liga giants splashed on his signature from Juventus in 2001.

“I know what it is to be the most expensive player in the world and I can hopefully offer him advice and mentor him,” he said.

“There’s always a lot of attention with a big transfer fee. As a player you don’t even think about the fee, but there is hysteria that comes with it.

“My door at Real Madrid will always be open for Gareth and during his first season he will need to use it. He was in the top three player in Europe last season, but he can reach even higher levels,’ he added.

“He will get even better. We are looking at a guy who can be the best player in the world for the next four or five years.”
