Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is set to press ahead with curing his defensive worries by sanctioning moves for Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld and Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori, according to the Metro.

The Reds have been thrust into a defensive crisis with new signing Kolo Toure picking up a groin problem this week and joins Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates on the sidelines.

Rodgers is way of being left short at the back and will now make his move for Sporting youngster Ilori after being linked with a move for the player all summer.

Portuguese under-20 international, Ilori, was born in London and is keen to try his hand in the Premier League after breaking through into Sporting’s first team. It is believed that a fee of around £6 million will be enough to land his signature as he enters the final year of his current deal.

However, the acquisition of Alderweireld may prove slightly more difficult with Roma and Atletico Madrid already opening talks with him, though his previously stated desire to play for Liverpool may stand them in good stead.

The Anfield outfit are also said to be considering a £10 million bid for Paris Saint Germain defender Mamadou Sakho.
