Wigan Athletic are closing in on the signing of Manchester United youngster Nick Powell on a season-long loan, according to the Daily Mail.

The 19-year-old is considered one of the brightest prospects at Old Trafford, but has only made six appearances for the club since signing from Crewe Alexandra last summer.

With plenty of top quality competition ahead of him at United in the form of the likes of Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley, Powell looks like he will have to continue his development elsewhere for now, and could gain some valuable experience playing in the Championship with Wigan.

The Latics were relegated from the Premier League last season after eight years in England’s top flight, and under new manager Owen Coyle are looking to rebuild and challenge for promotion this year.

So far they have managed to bring in the likes of Grant Holt, James McCLean and James Perch from Premier League clubs, and Powell could be another good addition in midfield, particularly in the event of the departure of Everton and Newcastle target James McCarthy.

Powell’s only goal so far for Manchester United came in a 4-0 win against Wigan at Old Trafford last season.
