Chelsea have reportedly rejected a bid from Eredivisie champions Ajax to take Marco van Ginkel on a season long loan, according to Sky Sports.

The Dutch side’s director of football Marc Overmars has revealed that the club enquired about the possibility of bringing the 20-year-old on board as a temporary replacement for Christian Eriksen, who now looks set to join Tottenham before transfer deadline day.

Van Ginkel has only just joined Chelsea from Vitesse Arnhem, but has yet to start a game for Jose Mourinho’s men so far this season.

Ajax were hoping that Chelsea would allow them to take him on a season long loan, but Overmars said the west London club have rejected the offer.

“We would like to see van Ginkel playing at Ajax,” Overmars told NIS.

“For that type of player we are willing to pay top price.

“I’ve tried, but Chelsea will not let him go.”

Overmars admits they are struggling to find a replacement for Eriksen should he seal his proposed move to Tottenham.

“It is also currently difficult for us,” said Overmars when asked about replacing Eriksen.

Van Ginkel made over 100 appearances over a three year spell with Vitesse, scoring 23 goals.
