Lineker spent a portion of his career in Spain with Barcelona and thinks Bale has all the attributes to succeed at Real Madrid as long as he can cope with the expectation that will arise from his big money move.
Former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker has urged Gareth Bale to throw his “heart and soul” at his move to Real Madrid following the Welshman’s £86 million transfer to the Spanish giants, BBC Sport reports.
Bale will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player tomorrow afternoon and Lineker thinks the Welshman has all the attributes to succeed in Spain as long as he has the mental strength to cope with such as high profile transfer.
“Ability-wise he is phenomenal. A player costing that much money, it’s hard to justify that sort of fee. It’s an incredible amount of money and no player is worth that, beyond perhaps [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo.
“If they came on the market now they would be worth more than Bale but along with Neymar they’re the two players that are coming up as world superstars.”
Lineker also thinks learning Spanish will help Bale to settle at Madrid, believing all successful British players that have moved to Spain have been able to communicate on and off the pitch.
Lineker added: “It’s important, more than anything, learn the language. If you’re happy and communicate off the pitch that will reflect in your football and how things go on the pitch.
“If you look back at all of the British players that have been successful abroad, it’s the ones that have got themselves into the culture, learnt the language and made life there enjoyable, rather than harbouring thoughts about England and getting back home”.
