Arsenal have completed the signing of Real Madrid and Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil for a fee of £40million, according to Goal.com.

Although the club are yet to make an official announcement of the deal, it is believed that Ozil has passed his medical and put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Gunners.

This signing smashes Arsenal’s previous transfer record, and signals a huge change of approach in the transfer market from the last few years, in which Arsene Wenger has often shown a reluctance to fork out big money for established world class stars.

Ozil will also become the club’s highest earner, with wages of around £130,000 a week, as he puts to an end a three-year stay in Spain with Real Madrid.

The former Werder Bremen man was a big success with the La Liga giants, winning the title in the 2011/12 season and proving himself to be a highly influential part of their attacking style.

However, he has chosen a move to Arsenal late on this summer after Real yesterday announced the signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham for a world-record £85million fee, which sees Ozil’s place in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup come under serious threat.

Ozil could be joined by two loan signings of Demba Ba and Emiliano Viviano before the close of the transfer window.
