Arsenal could still face competition from Serie A side Roma for the signing of Chelsea misfit Demba Ba, according to the Daily Express.

The Senegalese international is not part of Jose Mourinho’s first-team plans at Stamford Bridge this season, with Samuel Eto’o brought in upfront from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

Ba has failed to settle at Chelsea after moving to the club from Newcastle in January, but is admired by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as he seeks more depth upfront and an alternative to the in-form Olivier Giroud.

The 29-year-old was also a target for the Gunners in January, following some fine form for Newcastle, though they were beaten to his signing by Chelsea on that occasion.

They now hope to land him on a season-long loan, though Roma are also keen on signing a striker after they sold last season’s top scorer Pablo Osvaldo to Southampton for £15million.

They also lost Erik Lamela to Tottenham for £30million, and hope Ba and recent addition Adem Ljajic can help replace these two influential players in attack this season.

Arsenal will hope to beat Roma to the signing of Ba, completing a successful transfer window if they also manage to complete the transfer of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
