Arsenal have officially confirmed the signing of Real Madrid midfield player Mesut Ozil for a club-record fee of £42.4 million, according to the BBC.

The coveted Germany international has put pen to paper on a five-year contract worth a whopping £140,000 per week that makes the 24-year-old easily the highest-paid player now at the Emirates.

Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger has been a known admirer of the playmaker’s for some time now and even tried to buy Ozil three years ago, only for the German to instead decide to move to the Santiago Bernabeu from Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen for a fee of 15m euros.

However, despite managing to score 27 goals in total for los Blancos in 158 matches in all competitions in the mean time, the Spanish giants have been forced to balance the books after splashing out a world-record fee of €100m euros for Tottenhan Hotspur wide man Gareth Bale on Monday.

And that resulted in Madrid president Florentino Perez handing new Real boss Carlo Ancelotti an ultimatum: either the Italian keeps Argentina international Angel Di Maria in the Spanish capital this season, or Ozil, with the Italian opting for the former, hence the player’s subsequent decision to join the Gunners.
