Liverpool striker Luis Suarez claims he decided to stay at the club ‘some weeks ago’ and have no thought to attempting a switch late on in the transfer window, Sky Sports reports.

The controversial Uruguayan announced at the start of the transfer window that he wanted to leave the club with Arsenal and Real Madrid waiting in the wings to take him away from Anfield.

His future looked to be in limbo as Liverpool stood their ground on their insistence that he would not be sold – especially to a fellow Premier League rival. Brendan Rodgers rejected several bids for the player and even forced him to train with the youth team before making him apologise to the rest of the squad.

However, Suarez has now insisted that he is pleased with his decision to stay at the club and now hopes to repay the faith shown in him by the club’s fans.

Upon arriving in South America where he is to join up with the Uruguayan squad for international duty he told the Daily Mirror; “For me, it has been closed for some time. I made the decision to stay at Liverpool some weeks ago and I want to stay and work for the team from now on.

“I will go back to Liverpool to play and I hope to be the same player the fans can trust.

“I said I wanted to play in the Champions League, but when that didn’t happen, I knew I’d be happy with life to have my future at Liverpool.”

Reports emerged on Monday that Real Madrid were hoping to snatch his signature before the transfer deadline passed at 11pm, but the 26-year-old has insisted that he paid no attention to the stories.

“It is closed now and I am comfortable with the decision,” he added.

“I said if there was something good, I would be interested. If not, then I am happy at Liverpool. I can say now I am happy.

“Of course I am not playing. I just want to concentrate on getting ready to play for Liverpool again. It is good I will be able to play in Uruguay.

“We have four matches coming up that will decide if we go to the World Cup and I want to be important in those games.”
