Manchester United had the misery of missing out on a number of high profile targets this summer highlighted by their failure to complete a deadline day deal for Real Madrid full back Fabio Coentrao because the paperwork couldn’t be completed in time, the Mirror reports.

United boss David Moyes had been targeting Everton’s Leighton Baines and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera to cap off an unsuccessful transfer window, but both moves were scuppered early on, and Moyes had hoped to land the Portuguese star at the 11th hour.

However, Coentrao will now stay in Madrid as the deal fell through because the necessary paperwork could not be completed before the deadline passed at 11pm on Monday night.

The news will come as a disappointment to United fans after they made just two signings throughout the entire window, with young defender Guilermo Varela already being linked with a move away on loan, and the failed capture of the Madrid star now puts Moyes in the awkward position of having to explain to Partice Evra why a new left back was on his shopping list.

Coentrao has yet to make a La Liga appearance for Real this season and was keen to move following the summer departure of former Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, who brought his compatriot to the Bernabeu in 2011.
